Rentals with Marcus & Management With JAG Barns

Jennifer, owner of Marcus Rentals and JAG Barn Management, is proud of her heritage as a 4th generation finance professional and is very grateful to her parents, grandparents and great grandparents for teaching her what it takes to run a successful finance based business.

Jennifer's Heritage

Over 100 years ago, Arthur A. Argo, Sr. (Jennifer’s great grandfather) had a vision to begin a community bank in Trezevant, Tennessee. He was raised in a small community with family values. It was his desire that his business would help the community to grow and prosper by working together. He strived to create a bank based on integrity and honesty, which still remains today. On January 21, 1916, the bank then known as Farmers & Merchants Bank opened its doors with Arthur Sr. serving as the Bank’s first President. In 1960, Arthur A. Argo, Jr. (Jennifer’s grandfather) began working in the bank learning the quality business ethics and community service values from his father. In 1960, Arthur Jr. was named President of Farmers & Merchants Bank. In 1981, George L. Atwood (son-in-law of Mr. Argo, Jr. and Jennifer’s father) assumed the role of Bank President and CEO. In 1995, George and Jennifer opened the Bank’s first branch location. After adding a successful branch, the Bank continued to expand into eleven other communities.

In 2015, George entrusted Jennifer Marcus and her sister, Andrea, to manage the Bank. At that time Jennifer was named as the CEO. On January 1, 2016 to commemorate the bank being open for 100 years, Jennifer and Andrea decided to honor this achievement by changing the name to Centennial Bank. In 2017, due to unexpected medical conditions Jennifer stepped down as CEO and Andrea took her place as CEO. Jennifer continues to be active with the Bank as a member of the Board of Directors.

Today, Jennifer and Andrea continue to operate Centennial Bank in a community bank atmosphere that reflects the values of their great-grandfather, their grandfather and their father. The mission of Centennial Bank is to remain a financially strong family-owned Bank committed to serving our communities, maintaining superior relationships with our customers, offering innovative products and services while providing a rewarding work environment for our employees.

Get to know the owner Jennifer Marcus

I felt at a young age that I wanted to be in some type of Management and decided to test myself at 19 and became the General Manager of a brand-new Waffle House. It was one of the hardest, but most rewarding things I ever did. I found through that experience that I was on the right career path and it proved to me that with hard work, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn from others that I did have what it would take to follow in my Dads footsteps to become a committed leader. For the next 5 years I worked in management in the hotel and restaurant industry. One day out of the blue my Dad called me up and asked if I was ready to come help him grow our family-owned bank. Unbelievably, being a banker is the one thing I said growing up I would never do. I am thankful that my Dad gave me the opportunity to come work with him. There is no doubt it was God’s ultimate plan for me to bring my management skills and to learn from some of the best bankers in the world how to be successful in the world of finance. It was a long road from being a Waffle House Manager to ultimately 25 years later becoming the CEO of Centennial Bank. In 2009 I decided to open a couple of rent-to-own businesses simultaneously as I worked at the bank. With so much on my plate, I learned how important it was for me to trust and seek God’s plan in all I did and not rely on myself alone.

In 2013 I was devastated when out of nowhere my body started attacking my spinal cord and optic nerve. A specialist at Vanderbilt University Hospital diagnosed me with two rare autoimmune diseases and informed me there was no treatment available. Needless to say, my life and my daughters’ lives were turned upside down. Unfortunately, due to these medical conditions there came a time when I could no longer be there daily with my bank family, but I am so thankful that God gave me 20 years to work alongside of my incredible little sister, my Dad and an amazing group of bankers that I will always look at as friends and my bank family. I am thankful to continue as a Board member where I can stay involved with the bank and employees that I love so very much. I will forever be grateful that years ago my Dad believed in me and asked me to pick up my life and move back to my hometown to work with him. I am now actively working from home with Marcus Rentals and JAG Barn Management, where I am really enjoying watching the companies grow and evolve. My employees and I are constantly making improvements and changes as the RTO business and the world itself changes. My main goals in the RTO companies are exactly the same as I had at the bank. My Dad taught me many years ago that to have a successful business you must keep God at the center of everything you do and to always treat your employees and customers with kindness and the utmost respect. I’ve learned that no matter what life throws your way you can still have a rewarding life if you seek, and trust Gods plans and not rely on yourself alone.

Several years ago, when I was dealing with what was probably the worst time of my life, my best friend gave me a little piece of paper where she wrote down a Bible verse that has changed how I look at everything in life. For I know the plans I have for you, “declares the Lord,” plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:11-13. I still have that little piece of paper as a constant reminder that God is always there for me no matter how good or bad things seem. My current business goals is for Marcus Rentals and JAG Barn Management to continue growing by constantly finding new ways to be the best RTO company we can be and to always be consistent and friendly with our RTO product owners, the lot owners and the manufacturers that we deal with on a daily basis.

Our Marcus Team

Jennifer Marcus
Founder

Hello, my name is Jennifer Marcus and I am the owner of Marcus Rentals and JAG Barn Management. I have an Associate’s Degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Sullivan University and a Bachelor’s of Science in Organizational Leadership from Union University. I actively worked at Centennial Bank (formerly Farmers and Merchants Bank) for over 20 years. I am still involved with the bank as a member of the Board of Directors. In 2009 I started my first RTO business as I worked at the bank. Several years ago, due to medical issues, I could no longer be active in the bank on a daily basis and ultimately stepped down from my CEO position. It was a very difficult time in my life. However, I found that due to this huge change I was able to spend much more time working from home with my RTO companies and I am enjoying every minute of it. The best thing that happened from not being able to get out and about as much is for the first time ever, I was able to be home when my girls came home from school and spend more time with them. I learned another lesson from God through all of this and that is when one door closes another door opens. Sometimes things don’t seem to go the way I maybe would have chosen, but I just keep trusting in God and know He will never lead me astray.

My pride and joy are of course my girls. Gina is a graduate of Union University with a degree in Psychology and plans to start nursing school next semester to become a Nurse Practitioner specializing in Psychiatry. Abby attends the University School of Jackson where she enjoys playing soccer and tennis. When I am not working, I love spending time with them. The girls and I love to go on cruises, visit my parents at their condo on the beach or just have a girl’s night where we all get in my bed and watch a good movie. I am so blessed to get to work alongside of my amazing employees at Marcus Rentals and JAG Barn Management. They work hard every day for our RTO customers and strive to make our business a top-notch RTO contract and management company. I am extremely grateful for each one of my employees and customers. I look forward to working in the RTO industry for many more years.
